Iraqi Dispatches and Newtopia

Michael at Heliolith pointed me towards Dahr Jamail's Iraqi dispatches. He seems to be a free agent freelancer intent on filing reports from Iraq with as much independance and attitude as possible, and his first hand accounts of life in Iraq are invaluable for their color. I'm not sure what to make of bits like this:
A doctor walks in and asks the nurse who is taking my blood what she does with the used needles. “We sterilize them after use then they are incinerated,” she replies. He waves his hand back and forth while telling her, “No more. We are now instructed by the Ministry of Environment there are no facilities for this, so we are to sterilize them and reuse them."
They seem to be simply "dispatched" without further reporting. That seems like a pretty big story, right there, and one wants to know more about what the Ministry of Environment has to say about it.

Instead of his own About section, Dahr Jamail points readers to an interview he gave Newtopia Magazine, which was an interesting find in itself. The current issue's theme is Economics, and I plan on later perusing this essay on Economics for Green Activists by the Co-chair of the Green Party (which might finally be able to escape the shadow of Naderism now). At first glance, anyway, I really like the site's design and concept, and it's nice to see someone taking web-publishing so seriously.
